This was an EXQUISITE WINE – a 2 yr old Freeman 2003 Akiko Cuvee Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast. It was sumptuous and balanced plus adding to ths delight was meeting Ken and Akiko. At this pinot noir event at John Ash’s I got to experience some of the best Sonoma county(west county) pinots.
When you see the above image, what do imagine your wine tasting experience would be?
When you sniff, sip and imbibe a glass of wine, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it a picture, a movie star, words, or only sensory?
Is it a word like yuck or yum? Is it a lexicon of wine descriptors – tar, smoke, berries? Is it more poetic – voluptuous or bold, a Bret Michaels of wines? Do images EVER come to mind?
For years, I’ve been photographing wines and molecules through the microscope always trying to understand if there’s more meaning in the beauty or the expressions of the molecular cooperations. For indeed, what we see is how, in the case of wine, the many molecules come together. Some wines, in spite of their more than 300 chemicals, may show only circles, others ‘spears’ while some show a great complexity.
Now what might these pictures show you about a wine? One is a hearty red blend of many varietals and the other a strong petite sirah.
Wine IDs – who are we
The hearty wine on the left is 2007 La Sirena Pirate TreasuRED, a blend of 7 grapes from Napa Valley. Wonderful!
The other was part of a wonderful petite sirah tasting shared by Jo Diaz, Exec Director of PS I love you. It is a portrait of a petite sirah from 2007 Eos Estate, Paso Robles.
