This time of year is tricky in that it’s a time of both celebration and going into the darkest times, time to go inner.  Plus the chill of winter and wetness does a lot to dampen spirits.  So what brings you cheer or balance?

What cheers me – the people I love, a warm fire in the wood-burning stove, a bowl of soup, and pretty pictures to look at.  I definitely need to add a glass of wine to this picture. What I also may do is  reflect on life.

I’ve been thinking about why in the world did I ever get ‘hooked’ on the inner world of wine.  My quick answer  -for beauty, a unique art form but especially its story of life and death!

For even in death, wine is beautiful, like the changing colors of trees and vines.  And in the wisdom of science-nature, dying wine looks like fallen leaves.  And in the world of cells, their dying process called apoptosis means fallen leaves.  Who woulda thought….

Approaching its later years, wine begins to lose dimension and ability to reflect light when it begins to lose vitality.     What could that mean as a metaphor for us –  how do we recognize our own beauty as we age; how do we retain our ability to reflect light.

So rather than thinking we’re falling apart, or that old bottle of wine has, what do we each bring to the table of celebrating life.
