There have been times when I’ve thought about whether human cells are intelligent or not.  Sometimes I thought they’re being smart was simply a metaphor. I’ve studied them, written about them, have a book about discovering their intelligence, but what does that really mean?

I recently revisited the work of one of the scientists I talk about in my book – Guenter Albrecht-Buehler at Northwestern University Medical School- and was amazed to discover what he writes about – yep – cell intelligence. And he’s gone beyond metaphor to experimental proofs.  Until I read this material, I knew only about his work relating to ‘cell vision’ – the eyes of the cell.

He talks about cell movement as the key to proving they are intelligent:  a cell has a signaling processing system that takes in information about its environment, its place in time and space, nearby  cells and obstructions, and somehow puts the information together to move in a given direction.

My own awe-inspiring experience decades ago came as I watched human blood cells moving intentionally, or so it seemed, towards a dangerous invader or a foreign object.  I asked myself, how did they know something was there, was it simply random, accidental, or was it directed in some mysterious way.

Albrecht-Bueler’s site is pretty complex but if the subject intrigues you it’s worth taking your time to sort it out for according to him Cell Intelligence is the future of medicine

Cells, not doctors heal patients.
Our guess of the next stage may begin with the recognition that no physician in the history of humanity has ever healed a patient. Only the cells of the patient can heal the patient. Only cells know how to close wounds, understand what to do with insulin and how to destroy pathogens. The best a physician can do, is to move obstacles out of the way of cells (e.g. by surgery), supply materials and weapons to the cells (e.g. drugs and building blocks of life) and leave the fight against disease to the cells.

Can we learn to ‘talk’ to cells?  We must know if they are intelligent first.

An intelligent cell contains a compartment, which is capable of collecting and integrating a variety of physically different and unforeseeable signals as the basis of problem-solving decisions.

I have taught workshops on how to communicate with our cells based on the science of molecular communication and shamanic strategies.  Yet my concern always came down to – if we can’t MAKE our cells do something by communicating with them via visualization, prayer or other means – such as eliminating a tumor – were we failures or not doing it right.  How do we not make someone, or ourselves, feel guilty, when the cellular conversation didn’t give us the results we were looking for? So I stopped teaching this because I didn’t  have a better answer.

Perhaps today I do.  Our cells are part of a larger environment of me, my home, my environment, my family, etc.  They have millions of jobs to do with miraculous outcomes most of the time.  Perhaps I simply  need to communicate to them my gratitude for keeping me alive as best they can.  When I do, a peacefulness comes over me that must give them a message that is better than my anxiety about what they are not doing or what I am not doing.

Think about it – you are a community of trillions on intelligent beings who support your life. What would happen if you start letting them know how grateful you are for all that they do?  Try it and let us know what happens.

COINCIDENCES?

The other day when I googled cellular intelligence I was also led to some of Deepak Chopra’s work, work I had not read until a few minutes ago.  His Book of Secrets talks eloquently about our cellular intelligence from not just the science perspective as Albrecht-Buehler does but from a spiritual perspective, of course.  Knowing of Deepak’s work since his Quantum Healing book I have had mixed feelings because I wanted more scientific proof for the claims he made.  And now to read his views on our cells and intelligence, how similar we are in our blending science of our cells and spirituality.  How grateful I am for being led to this work AFTER my own manuscript has been long completed.

And perhaps there is indeed wisdom in naming of books.  The manuscript I had given to Sounds True was entitled Cells and the Sacred.  What Sounds True wanted to call it – Secrets of our Cells. I balked but ultimately agreed that was a name that embodied both cells and the sacred.  And in the last two weeks we’ve agreed on a new subtitle:  Awakening the Body’s Inner Intelligence.  This was all done without my having any idea about Deepak’s Book of Secrets.

Why am I glad I had not looked at his book – because then I could have been accused of plagiarism or stealing his ideas when in fact the ideas came to both of us who fell in love with the intelligent design that is us.  Perhaps cosmic consciousness touched us both, at different times.  What I realize even more is that if I had read Deepak’s words I would certainly have doubted myself – that the ideas and concepts that I had about our cells, were not mine – that I had copied him.  Instead the truth is CELLS ARE INTELLIGENT & WISE – THEY CARRY THE WISDOM OF THE AGES, the operating instructions for Life.
